COMMENTS OF THE JURY
Press Photo of the Year 2010 Photographer: Vesa Laitinen, freelance, Lappeenranta Image: In the backwoods of the earth goes the path of a child (lyrics from a Finnish song) Date: 10 August 2010 at 19.14 Location: Sulkava Published: The Sunday pages of the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper on 15.8.2010 in connection with the story “Harsh summer”. In the picture: Anniina Hintsanen picks up her little sister Katariina in their home yard, covered by old pinetrees that had been felled by a storm named Asta. Jury citation: “A picture about the relief felt after a storm brings the news event to a human level. The viewer can easily identify with the situation in the painterly image.”
Photographer of the Year 2010 Photographer: Maija Tammi, freelance, New York / Aura Jury citation: ”The were many very evenly matched but different candidates at the finishing line, ranging from classic press photography to a very personal and intimate form of expression. Both extremes are very important in the work of a press photographer, so the decision was difficult. Finally we selected the photographer whose work has a very strong individual imprint. Her choice of subjects was also good. The series had a very intimate approach. The viewer was able to peek into people’s private everyday life in an interesting way. This was not news photography where the photographer was just present, but rather a situation that the photographer had to get herself into and where she had to win the acceptance of her subjects.”

There was heavy media pressure on the party at the time due to its internal power struggles, among other things. Published: In many media, such as Helsingin Sanomat, Iltalehti, Aamulehti and Suomen Kuvalehti Jury citation: “There were few images connected to the election funding scandal. The total of images seems to condense into this image about the escaping Centre Party’s administrative director Aki Haaro.”
Photographer: Juhani Niiranen, Helsingin Sanomat Date: 1 July 2010 Location: Parliament of Finland Image: The parliament has just voted for constructing new nuclear power plants. Photo Essay of the Year 2010 Photographer: Aino Salmi, freelance, Tampere Date: October 2010 Location: Groningen, The Netherlands Name of the series: Rick Published: The photographer’s own project Jury citation: “How many interesting pictures it is possible to take from one room? Through the details of the room and the expressions of the boy the viewer can dive into the reality inside his head. This very intimate series opens a door for the viewer to enter the Internet’s world of conspiracy theories. Each image in the series remains interesting in its own right and opens up through the short interviews with Rick. The series is not reportage but a mixture of portrait scenes, which form an essay. The series is an example of brilliant story-telling.”
